Nap Time

Amanda’s sleep routine isn’t scheduled, but I watch for signals that she’s getting tired and put her down accordingly (watching the clock is largely a western cultural idea).  She usually gets a ½ hour to an hour nap in the morning, another in the afternoon, and a third right after dinner.  Then she goes down for the night between 10 and 11pm.  That works out fine for me because I rarely get to bed before midnight, and this way she sleeps until about 7:30am.  Lately I’ve been taking her to bed with us around midnight because that way I don’t have to get out of bed when she wakes to nurse (she’s teething again right now, so she wakes at least twice).  Sometimes she screws up her own nap routine by taking a mini-nap in the car, or falling asleep in my arms, but waking the minute I set her down in the crib.  If she’s gotten at least 15 minutes under her belt, she won’t be able to go back to sleep (just like her Dad).   But that just means that her next nap will be earlier or longer than usual, to get her back on track.

My biggest hope during the day is that girls’ naps will overlap somewhat, and give me a break.  Eva goes down regularly around 1pm, though her naps vary in length, and Amanda’s is still pretty flexible.  It’s still a challenge for them not to wake each other, being in the same room.   If Amanda is already asleep in the crib and Eva decides to go down quietly with no crying, it’s not a problem.  But if she throws a fit, there goes Amanda’s nap.  And if I don’t grab Amanda quickly enough when she starts to cry, she might wake up Eva.
