Flora & Fauna

The past few days have been sunny and reasonably warm (in the 50’s).  The wind is still chilly and you can’t go outside without a warm jacket, but it’s nice to see some blue sky again.  As the season progresses, I’m getting more of an opportunity to observe which plants the previous owners chose for landscaping, such as tea roses and pansies.  Some of them, I confess, I still don’t recognize. The scattered yellow flowers on our lawn are really weeds, I know, but they sure are pretty.  I’ve noticed the neighbors’ daffodils and tulips are starting to come out of hibernation, as well.

I went to the nursery to do research for my garden, but it turns out, it’s not really warm enough to start planting vegetables in this climate until June.  I’ve been observing the sun throughout the day, trying to decide what part of the yard gets the most direct sunlight.  Turns out, the best I can hope for is partial sun.  Between the house and all the trees casting long shadows, there’s no place that gets full sun all day.  I need to pick an out-of-the-way spot along the fence so the kids can play without trampling it, and I’m thinking I may need to use a raised bed.  If turns out to be too much work on top of all the other projects we’re doing on the house, I may have to leave it for next year.  In the meantime, I’ve been pouring bleach water over our back patio in an attempt to kill all that slippery black and green moss.
