11/28/07 - It's COLD Outside!

Winter weather is officially here.  The temperature routinely dips below freezing at night, leaving sheets of ice and frost.  The snow level is down to 1000 feet now - not quite where we are yet, but it won’t be long.  The sun sets around 4:30pm and doesn’t rise until 7:30am.  The long shadows in the middle of the day still throw me off, making me think it’s early morning instead of noon.  We had a good windstorm last week that blew the last leaves off the trees, leaving just their bare skeletons in the breeze.  I hear the icy winds occasionally get powerful enough to blow trucks over and take down trees.  For a native Southern Californian, it's surreal to turn on the news and hear the local weatherman using terms like "freezing fog", "sleet", and "chains required".  I see footage of cars slipping and sliding on icy roads and hope that's never me, especially with kids in the car.  Even so, I’m putting together a backpack full of emergency stuff for the trunk, just in case: kitty litter (for traction), a first aid kit, flashlight, granola bars, beef jerky, extra diapers, wipes, and a blanket.  I’ve been told to always to have half a tank of gas, and a weeks’ worth of groceries in case the power goes out.  That’s just a precaution, of course.  Usually it’s just freezing cold and rainy.

Amanda Rolls Over!

Our little baby is growing up so fast!  This morning she rolled from her tummy onto her back.  She was so proud of herself, with a big grin on her face.  She's so strong, especially her grip.  Sometimes when I pick her up, she'll grab my neck and pinch it so hard it draws blood.  Amanda is a chatterbox, happily talking to anybody within earshot.  She's so insistent on being held, I think she's a budding "people person" who hates being left out of the action.  She bats at toys with her hands now, and if she's lucky enough to get one in her grip, she immediately tries to bring it to her mouth.  She's gotten too big for the baby bath, so we recently graduated her to the big tub.  I just put a rolled up towel under her head to support it.

Toddler Antics

Eva is a smart and observant young lady.  Her vocabulary expands by the day as she repeats everything she hears.  She found a toy guitar at Amber's house and started pretending she was Mary Rice Hopkins, strumming away and singing "Hippopotamus".  At my parents' house, she'd push Grandpa over and say, "Oh, Grandpa fall!"  Then she'd grunt and groan to try and push him back up, saying "I sorry, Eva!"  So she doesn't always get it right, but she's close.  She loved ordering Aunt Nanci's big dogs around, but got a little intimidated when she tried to do it to Grandma's little silky.  Mocha likes to jump up on Eva, lick her face and steal her toys, which scares her sometimes.  She loved feeding the horses, though, and would yell "C'mere, horsey!" as she stuck bits of hay through the fence.

At home Eva's learned how to open the fridge, and will frequently bring us something she found, like yogurt or juice, and ask to have it.  Then she won't eat it, so I guess the novelty is just in getting it herself.  Eva knows what things are for now, so she'll see us changing Amanda and bring us a diaper, or hear that we're going bye-bye and start trying to stuff her backpack with toys to bring along.  Sometimes she's too helpful, though.  This morning I was taking a shower while Eva watched a DVD and Amanda sat in the bouncy seat in the bathroom, so the steam could help clear up her stuffy nose.  Eva came in naked, claiming she was "wet" and needed a new diaper.  She'd decided she needed a change and stripped down in the cold morning air, even though she's sick with a cough.  I cut my shower short to get her a new diaper and dressed in something warm.  Gotta love how kids' minds work sometimes!

Battle of Wills

Toddlers are infamous for their stubborn streak, and ours is no exception.  Once Eva was so upset that Dave's hands were too full to carry her, she threw a royal tantrum in the parking lot and lay down in a muddy puddle of soggy leaves, refusing to walk.  Nap and bed times have become battles as she repeatedly gets up and comes out into the living room.  She always gets marched straight back to bed, but persists in trying anyway. Her latest ploy is to start asking for water, then tissues to wipe her nose, and sometimes she'll even hold it until naptime so she can ask for a diaper change.  Momma didn't raise no dummies! :)  If she's not getting far with one parent, she'll start crying for the other.  If Dave is making her stay in bed, she'll start begging for mommy.  If I'm the bad guy, she'll be calling  "Daddy!" between sobs.  Luckily Dave and I are on the same page, so that strategy rarely works.

11/27/07 - Stressed is "Desserts" spelled backwards

Perhaps that's why it so hard to stay away from chocolate when I'm stressed out. :) When I first became a Stay-At-Home-Mom, I thought it might be repetitive and boring at times, but I never thought it would be as stressful as my job. Turns out, it's often much more so.  I think it's because of how absolutely dependent young children are on you 24 hours a day, and the knowledge that they're counting on you to fix it every time they're wet, dirty, hungry, cold, hot, bored, tired or uncomfortable.  Add an endless influx of household chores that never seem to be finished, and it can get a little overwhelming at times.

I've noticed that it's really starting to get to me.  Lately I've had a couple days where I get to the point where I just want to throw something or scream, and it scares me because that's just not me.  I've been edgy, short-tempered, irrational and overly sensitive, qualities I absolutely despise in others, much less myself.  I've also been getting frequent headaches that trigger bouts of nausea, which doesn't help.  I finally went to a doctor to get my thyroid tested, because it's a common problem in my family.  The doctor agreed that it was too early for PMS and a little late for postpartum symptoms (although neither have ever been that severe for me).  She's still waiting on the test results, but in the meantime she suggested that it might just be the combined stresses of a new baby, a major move, traveling alot with two small children, adjusting to an unfamiliar climate, and getting ready for the holidays.  It sure sounded like a lot, the way she said it.  I've been in such a "get it done" survival mode, I never really thought about it.  My chiropractor says my neck is always so tight, he thinks massage might help.  If I had someone to watch the kids and Amanda would be willing to take breast milk from a bottle, I might try it.

11/26/07 - Amanda's First Thanksgiving

Dave had to work on Thanksgiving Day, but we joined some friends from church later in the evening for dinner.  Eva enjoyed playing with their 3-year-old daughter, and we all had a great time.  On Friday I packed up while David was at work.  Poor Eva squeezed into the space where I hid the humidifier and got a steam burn on her thumb, giving her a painful blister.  We took off around 5 o'clock, but didn't get far before Amanda started screaming, so we had to finally pull over at a Target store to change diapers and let her nurse.  She started crying the minute we put her back in her seat, of course, but soon fell asleep.  About an hour later we were cruising down the 5 when a deer suddenly dashed in front of us.  Dave swerved and managed to barely miss hitting it, but it certainly gave all of us a scare.  We arrived in Grants Pass around 11:30pm, and the next day had a belated Thanksgiving feast with my family.  Grandma Glynna made turkey and a ham, and Great-Grandma's famous Toll House pie (basically a giant chocolate-chip cookie).  She'd also set up Great-Grandma's Dickens Christmas village, complete with motorized skiers, sledders and ice skaters.  Eva was enthralled.

11/21/07 - Sick Kids

Both the girls are sick right now, but Amanda is especially miserable.  This is her first real cold, and I have to keep suctioning her nose with the bulb so she can breathe or nurse, which she hates.  I’m trying to keep her upright as much as possible to make it easier for her to breathe.  Dave’s work isn’t going very well either, and he’s going to have to work Thanksgiving and Friday, which means we’ll have to delay our trip to my parent’s house until late Friday night.  We planned to drive while the girls were asleep anyway, since Amanda hates the car seat.  Some friends from our church small group invited us over for Thanksgiving dinner, so we might head over to their house Thursday if Dave can get off work early enough, and the girls are feeling better.

11/20/07 - San Diego Visit

We went down to San Diego this weekend to see friends and family before the holiday travel rush.  It was weird to be back, but not be able to just drive home to our place.  We stayed with our friends X and Amber, and Eva was so excited to see them again (and thrilled to meet their new hamster).  Aunt Nanci hosted a wonderful early Thanksgiving dinner for all of Dave's family.  Eva loved playing with the dogs and ordering them around.  It's a good thing they're so patient with toddlers!   I also got to visit with my friends Laurelle and Jennifer, and Johnny drove down to see us.  Dave was able to squeeze in a surfing session, too, and was reveling in the chance to wear shorts and sandals.  It was a little strange to be back in warm weather with dusty-green foliage, after living for two months with chilly weather and vibrant fall leaves.   All-in-all I'd say it was a perfect weekend.  We got to visit almost everyone and everything we hoped to while we were there, and everyone got a chance to spend time with their favorite little girls. Eva went home laden with new toys from her loving aunties, including a new plush horse (that she tries to ride) and a “Dora the Explorer” doll that’s almost as big as she is.  :)

AIRPLANE!

Eva loves airplanes, and she sure got her fill on this trip.  I flew down with the girls by myself on Thursday, and Dave followed the next day. It was an uneventful flight, apart from Amanda needing a new outfit because her diaper overflowed, and Eva spilling dry cereal into the aisle for people to pulverize into the carpet - all before we took off!  The hardest part is going through security.  They make you break down the stroller, remove everyone's shoes and take the baby out of the car seat so they can all go through the X-ray machine.   Thankfully I had the sling, and a compassionate gentleman helped me through because he said, "I'd like to know someone helped my wife if she was in the same situation."  The flight back was much easier because Dave was with me.

11/9/07 - Eva's First Haircut

We took Eva down to Great Clips for her first hair cut today. She was apprehensive at first, watching the stylist warily as if she suspected this was some sort of doctor's appointment. But she was brave and cooperative, and totally excited about the balloon and sucker they gave her afterwards. They put a generous clipping of baby curls in a card that we could put in her baby book to commemorate the occasion. It's sort of sad to see her grow up so fast, but it's nice not to have so much hair in her face anymore. I posted a video of it on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/oneloved1

Isn't She Cute?

11/8/07 - Big Day!

Two exciting things happened today: I finally got my Oregon license in the mail (passed on my second try), and Eva went #2 in the potty! (TMI?) LOL! We've been trying for weeks just to get her comfortable with the toilet, giving her stickers just to sit on it, and finally bringing out the toddler size since the big one seemed to intimidate her. Several times I've asked her to sit on the potty when I knew she had to go, but she'd say "no!" and run away, and not come back until she wanted me to change her diaper.

Today she finally used it, but when I asked if she'd gone, she didn't want me to see. I clapped and cheered, gave her a sticker and M&M - everything to let her know this was a positive thing that she'll want to repeat. A few minutes later she finished going in her diaper. When I asked her why didn't she use the potty, she said "yucky!" I really don't know what her hang up is. Is she embarrassed by the potty and the fact that we're making a big deal about it? Is she really grossed out by it because it's "yucky"? Or is it just a big change she doesn't feel ready for? At any rate, I'm pretty sure she knows exactly what we want her to do, but she's just not into it right now.

11/7/07 - Real Estate

We've started looking at houses in earnest. We've gotten quotes from brokers, met with real estate agents and started sorting through local listings. This morning I walked through five different houses with the girls and our realtor while Dave was at work. It helps to narrow the field. Dave is going to look at a couple of the better ones when he gets a chance to take a long lunch. It's amazing what you can get in this area for around $200,000. Everything I saw was at least 3 bed, 1.5 bath with a yard. Back in San Diego, you could barely get even a condo for that anymore.

Sisters

Pulling hair, scratching faces, tattling, hugs and kisses. They're officially sisters now, I guess. Some things I figured I had a few years before I'd have to deal with, but here we are already! Eva likes to lay down next to Amanda on her play mat, but she gets mad when sister's flailing arms hit her in the face, or those grasping little fists get a vice-grip on her hair. She'll yell and come tell Mommy, "pull hair!" Then Eva likes to unbutton sister's clothes and blow raspberries on her tummy. She'll inspect her diaper and come running to tell me "sister poopy!" She'll pull off Amanda's socks, sniff her little toes and yell "Phew! Stinky feet!" And tonight she decided to try and run over sister's head with her big wheel.

11/5/07 - Doctor Visits

Eva is feeling better now, thankfully. I still have no ides what she had, other than a high fever, since there were no cold or flu symptoms. She's got her energy and appetite back, and her temperature is back to normal. I took the girls to their first pediatrician appointment here, and was very pleased with the doctor recommended to us. Several of the ladies from church and the playgroup go to him, and he's very gentle and patient with the kids.

Amanda weighed in at 14lbs, 10oz. and 24¾ inches. She got her first vaccinations, which is always a heart-breaking experience, and Eva got a flu shot. She was very brave and only cried for a minute. They recommended it because it could be dangerous to expose Amanda to the flu, and Eva plays with a lot of different toys and kids at the community center and church nursery, where she's likely to be exposed.

Growing Baby

At 15 weeks, Amanda isn't a newborn anymore. She's alert and interactive, interested in everything that's going on around her. If you sit her up facing you, she'll happily carry on a conversation of babbling baby talk. We brought out Eva's old activity mat for her, and she enjoys looking at the bright colors and dangling toys. Eva likes to lay down and play alongside her, though Amanda is likely to get an elbow or foot in her face once her big sister gets going.

Amanda is a sensitive little soul, and is easily startled by loud noises. Even though she's heard Eva squeal and scream every day of her short life, it will still give her a jump and make her cry, especially if she's sleepy.

11/2/07 - Dancing Girl

Eva isn't feeling well today. Even on Tylenol, her temperature has gotten up to 102, even though she has no other symptoms. She's just cranky and listless, has no appetite and keeps falling asleep on the couch. Thank goodness we found a new pediatrician. She's been watching DVDs much of the day, especially ones with music. Eva loves to sing and dance. She's always singing her favorite songs while going about her day, and if you're familiar with the original, you might just catch on to which one she's trying to sing. :) One of her favorites is a song called "Hippopotamus" by Mary Rice Hopkins (Eva calls her "Honkins"). The chorus goes "Hip, Hip, Hip, Hippopotamus!", but Eva gets it mixed up and starts singing "Pee, pee, pee..." It's sort of embarrassing when she starts singing that in public. The video has hand motions that get Eva up and dancing around, which I think is great. I'd like to find some other sing-along kids' DVDs with dance moves to help Eva get some exercise when it's raining and she can't go outside. I've seen a few where the kids just sit around and sing, and that doesn't help me.

Play Time

Dave has introduced Eva to the game of playing tent in the living room, and now it's one of her favorite games. They put the blanket over the couch and chair, and Eva likes to hide under it and listen to us looking for her: "Where's Eva? There she is!" Eva likes to take her shoes off and use the socks as mittens. Even in the coldest weather, it's hard for me to keep her shoes on unless I double-tie the laces. Dave hates that because he can't get them undone, but they're supposed to be childproof. :) I guess Eva got so used to going barefoot during the summer, she doesn't want to stop. I guarantee she'll suddenly start wanting to wear shoes on the hottest day of July. :)

Mixed Up

I thought I was being diligent to remember to set all the clocks back for Daylight Savings last night. It wasn't until this morning that I realized I'd jumped the gun and done it a day early. Oops! That's not the only confusion I've had lately. Sometimes I call Amanda "Eva" by mistake, especially if I'm sleep deprived. I used to call Eva "Barocha" when she was little, because the last baby in my life had been my little sister and brother.
